Eligibility Criteria

Candidates in SC/ST categories need a minimum of 55%. Candidates who have completed their degree or passed their final semester examination on or before the cut-off date are eligible. Rounding off of percentage is not permitted — 59.99% does not qualify as 60%.
For Advt. 03/2026 (9 disciplines), the minimum qualification varies by discipline:
- Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, System, E&T, Industrial Engineering: Full-time Degree in the relevant branch of Engineering with minimum 60% marks
- Geology: M.Sc. or M.Tech. in Geology or Applied Geology with minimum 60% marks
- Rajbhasha (Hindi): MA in Hindi with minimum 60% marks; Hindi and English as main subjects at graduation level with minimum 50%
- Company Secretary: Graduate degree plus Associate or Fellow membership of ICSI
Final-year candidates in the 2025–26 academic session may apply for Advt. 03/2026, provided they submit results by 31 August 2026.

The upper age limit for General (UR) and EWS candidates is 30 years as on 30 April 2026. Category-wise relaxations as stated in the official notification are: OBC-NCL — 3 years; SC/ST — 5 years; PwBD candidates — 10 to 15 years depending on category; Ex-Servicemen — as per Government of India guidelines. The maximum age limit under any category, including all applicable relaxations, is 56 years as on 30 April 2026. Permanent employees of CIL and its subsidiaries are not subject to any age limit.
Salary and Benefits
Selected candidates will be appointed as Management Trainees in E-1 Grade with a pay scale of ₹60,000 – ₹1,80,000. The initial basic pay at the time of joining is ₹60,000 per month. In addition to basic pay, the package includes Dearness Allowance, HRA, cafeteria allowances, and Performance Related Pay (PRP). Other benefits mentioned in the official notification include CMPF, CMPS, gratuity, leave provisions, medical facilities, and the CIL Executive Defined Contribution Pension Scheme. On successful completion of one year of training, the candidate is confirmed as an Officer in E-1 Grade in the respective discipline.
A service bond of ₹3 lakh is executed at the time of joining. A deduction of ₹5,000 per month is made from salary towards this bond amount, which is refunded without interest after 60 months of continuous service. Candidates must be willing to be posted anywhere in India, including coalfield areas under CIL’s subsidiary companies.
Selection Process
For Advt. 01/2026 (Mining/GATE route): Candidates are shortlisted category-wise in a ratio of 1:3 (three candidates per vacancy) based on GATE-2025 scores in Mining Engineering. In the event of a tie in GATE score, the candidate with a higher percentage in the minimum qualifying degree is placed higher; if a tie persists, the older candidate is given preference. The final merit list is prepared solely on the basis of GATE-2025 scores. Shortlisted candidates are then called for Document Verification (DV) and Initial Medical Examination (IME). Appointment is issued only after successful completion of both DV and IME.
For Advt. 03/2026 (CBT route): Selection is based entirely on performance in a Computer Based Online Test. There is no interview. The CBT consists of two papers, each carrying 100 marks with 100 objective-type questions, for a total of 200 marks. The duration is 3 hours in a single sitting. Paper-I covers General Knowledge, Reasoning, Numerical Ability, and General English. Paper-II covers professional knowledge specific to the candidate’s chosen discipline. The question paper is bilingual (English and Hindi); in case of discrepancy, the English version is final. There is no negative marking for wrong answers. Minimum qualifying marks per paper are: UR/EWS — 40; OBC — 35; SC/ST/PwD — 30. Candidates must qualify both papers separately. Merely clearing the cut-off does not guarantee selection; final merit is based on total CBT marks. Qualified candidates are subsequently called for Document Verification and Medical Examination.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Can I apply for both Advt. 01/2026 and Advt. 03/2026?
These are two separate advertisements with separate application portals. A candidate eligible for both may apply to each separately. However, under Advt. 03/2026, only one discipline application per candidate is permitted.
2. Is a GATE-2025 score mandatory for the CBT-route posts (Advt. 03/2026)?
No. GATE scores are not required for Advt. 03/2026. Selection for those 660 posts is based entirely on the Coal India Computer Based Test. A valid GATE-2025 score in Mining Engineering (Paper Code: MN) is mandatory only for Advt. 01/2026.
3. What happens if I score 59.99% in my degree — am I eligible?
No. The official notification explicitly states that rounding off of marks is not permitted. The minimum 60% requirement (or 55% for SC/ST) is absolute. 59.99% does not meet the threshold.
4. What is the service bond condition for selected candidates?
Selected candidates must execute a service bond of ₹3 lakh at the time of joining. A sum of ₹5,000 per month is deducted from salary towards this bond, which is refunded without interest after 60 months (5 years) of continuous service with CIL or its subsidiary companies.
5. Can final-year students apply for Advt. 03/2026?
Yes, but only candidates in the final semester or year of the 2025–26 academic session who expect to receive their results by 31 August 2026. They must upload marksheets up to the latest available semester at the time of application.
6. Where will selected Management Trainees be posted?
As stated in the official notification, postings can be anywhere in India, including operational and coalfield locations under CIL’s subsidiary companies. Candidates may indicate location preferences, but the final posting decision rests with CIL management and is binding.
