Both male and female candidates may apply. The official notification states that a limited number of seats are reserved for women candidates; the actual count will not exceed the ceiling specified in the notification. Based on merit and performance during training at INA, up to 7 candidates from the Mechanical Engineering stream may be allotted to B.Tech in Naval Architecture & Shipbuilding at the Naval Construction Wing (NCW), Kochi, as per Naval requirements.
The B.Tech degree on completion of the four-year course is awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The entire cost of training, including books, clothing, and messing, is borne by the Indian Navy.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
Candidates must have passed the Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 pattern) or an equivalent examination from any recognised board with a minimum of 70% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) combined, and a minimum of 50% marks in English (in either Class X or Class XII).
In addition, candidates must have appeared for JEE (Main) 2026 (for B.E./B.Tech). Shortlisting for SSB interviews will be done solely on the basis of the All India Common Rank List (CRL) published by NTA. Candidates must enter their CRL rank in the application form.
Age Limit
Candidates must have been born between 02 July 2007 and 01 January 2010 (both dates inclusive). This age band is fixed and applies equally to all male and female applicants. No age relaxation beyond these dates is mentioned in the official notification.
Nationality and Marital Status
Only unmarried candidates who satisfy the nationality conditions laid down by the Government of India are eligible. Any candidate who is found to be married, or who marries while under training, will be discharged from service and will be liable to refund the full cost of training, including pay, allowances, and any other expenditure incurred by the Government.
Salary and Pay
During the four-year B.Tech training period at INA Ezhimala, cadets receive a stipend as per the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) cadet entitlements. The specific stipend amount is not separately disclosed in the January 2027 course notification; candidates should refer to the official notification PDF on joinindiannavy.gov.in for the current figure.
Upon commissioning as Sub Lieutenant after successful completion of the course, officers are placed at 7th CPC Pay Matrix Level 10 with a starting basic pay of ₹56,100 per month (scale up to ₹1,77,500). This is supplemented by Military Service Pay (MSP), Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance or Naval Pay Premia (depending on posting), kit allowance, and ration in kind. Additional entitlements include CSD canteen facilities, AGIF group insurance, defence medical care (ECHS), and pensionary benefits after qualifying service.
Selection Process
The selection process consists of four stages, all of which must be cleared sequentially:
- Shortlisting via JEE (Main) 2026 CRL: Naval Headquarters will fix a cut-off rank from the NTA All India Common Rank List. Only candidates above the cut-off will be called for SSB. The cut-off rank is determined by the Navy and is not pre-announced.
- SSB Interview: A two-stage Service Selection Board interview held at Bangalore, Bhopal, Kolkata, or Visakhapatnam. SSB interviews for this intake are scheduled to commence from September 2026 onwards. Change of SSB centre is not permissible under any circumstances.
- Medical Examination: All SSB-recommended candidates undergo a medical examination as per Indian Navy medical standards applicable to this entry. No relaxation in medical standards is granted on any grounds. Change of medical hospital or centre is not permissible. Detailed medical standards and tattoo/height-weight guidelines are available on the official Indian Navy website. Candidates already declared medically fit for NDA/INA Jan 2027 need not repeat the medical examination.
- Merit List and Police/Character Verification: The final merit list is prepared on the basis of SSB marks. Candidates declared medically fit are considered for appointment subject to police and character verification. Inclusion in the merit list does not confer a right to appointment.
